"Une statue récemment découverte, consacrée par Tefnakht Ier à Amon-Rê, révèle des détails importants sur ses origines personnelles. Le texte de la statue indique que Tefnakht est le fils d'un certain Gemnefsoutkapou, et le petit-fils de Basa, un prêtre d'Amon, près de Saïs. Par conséquent, Tefnakht Ier ne descend pas réellement d'une lignée de chefs des tribus Mâ et Libou, comme on le croyait traditionnellement, mais plutôt d'une famille de prêtres, dont l'origine plus précise n'est pas connue."
